Wi-5 focuses on the development of innovative technologies to evolve APs into the basis of a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi network. In Wi-5, APs will become intelligent networking entities that can contribute to our aim of addressing the issues of inefficient spectrum usage and increasing the capacity of wireless networks. Moreover, while our approach will differ depending on the broad cases we consider, they will all share a common foundation.
APs under the management of the same service provider can be coordinated using novel Smart Functionalities to manage the site-wide use of the Wi-Fi frequency and optimise spectrum usage to deliver improved user services. In the context where APs are under the management of different service providers, new functionalities will be implemented into these APs to address these issues by cooperatively minimising interference and introducing support for (vertical) hand-over and roaming between Wi-Fi networks and between Wi-Fi and 3/4G networks.
Implementation of these solutions is all based on developing new client software for the Wi-Fi APs and user terminals in combination with a distributed platform for Wi-Fi added value services. This latter platform will provide the coordination of the smart Access Points and the cooperation between them.
